is getting smaller! The technology that is making it all possible is improved communications!  Wyatt Earp and his brothers only had to worry about what was going on in Tombstone.  Todays law enforcement officer has to deal with highly mobile criminals who are no longer bound to a single jurisdiction, state, or even a nation!  Clearly, this calls for new technology to provide improved law enforcement communications.

If given a wish list, most law enforcement agencies have indicated their preferences in basically the following order.

1)     Efficient communications within their local jurisdiction.  This includes adequate coverage, reliability, and privacy.  Solutions involve clear channel communications, equipment capable of communicating with officers in the vehicle or on foot as well as various types of encryption systems.

2)     The ability to communicate with other agencies in time of need.  Notably, a system capable of allowing differing radio systems to communicate with each other.

3)     Enhanced officer safety along with more effective time management tools. Solutions include vehicle location systems and computer aided dispatch.

4)     The ability to provide data access to central computer systems by field personnel.  Mobile computing terminals with records access software is rapidly becoming more common.
